ABOUT THE EDITORS

Bengt Sundén

Dr. Bengt Sundén was graduated as a M. Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and presented his PhD thesis in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics at Chalmers University. He was appointed Docent (the highest academic degree in Sweden) and held positions there as Research Associate, Docent and University lecturer. In 1992 he was appointed Professor of Heat Transfer at Lund University (Engineering faculty, Lund Institute of Technology), Lund, Sweden. Since 1995 he serves as the Head of the Department of Energy Sciences. Professor Sundén has been teaching undergraduate courses in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Basic Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, and Numerical Heat Transfer. He has taught graduate courses in Heat Transfer, Heat and Mass Transfer, Convective Boiling and Condensation, Numerical Flow Simulation, Thermal Radiation, and Momentum, Mass and Heat Transfer in Combustion Processes. His current research topics are: Enhancement of heat transfer in compact heat exchangers, e.g., radiators, oil coolers; numerical methods of convective flow and heat transfer in complex narrow geometries, e.g., cooling of combustor walls, recuperators and intercoolers in gas turbine systems; combustion-related heat transfer including thermal radiation, gas turbine heat transfer, evaporation and condensation in plate heat exchangers, thermal imaging techniques, PIV, heat exchanger networks (process integration), and transport phenomena in fuel cells. His publication list includes about 300 papers in well-recognised journals, books and proceedings. Professor Sundén has also delivered several invited lectures and papers. He has been editor of sixteen books published by international publishing houses. Two textbooks (presently in Swedish) have been issued. Professor Sundén is involved in referee tasks for more than thirty international journals and has been active in several international and organising committtees, boards etc. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Heat Exchangers. He is also editor-in-chief for a book series Developments in Heat Transfer. In addition, he is on the editorial board for another four journals. Professor Sundén is a fellow of ASME. From 2005, he serves as associate editor of the prestigeous ASME Journal of Heat Transfer. He has achieved several international awards. In 2006 he was appointed honorary professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. Professor Sundén has supervised (at Chalmers and Lund University) 31 licentiate of Engineering theses and 25 doctoral (PhD) theses. Presently he is supervising 10 hired PhD students.

Ramesh K. Shah

Dr. Ramesh K. Shah received his B.E. from Gujarat University, India, and M.S., Engineer, and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. He worked for Air Preheater Company and Avco Lycoming before completing his graduate studies. Active in the ASME at local and national levels, he is the Past Chairman of the Heat Transfer Division, a former Technical Editor of the Journal of Heat Transfer and the Past Vice President of the ASME Board on Communications. He is co-founder and former editor-in-chief of an international journal: Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science. He is a member of the honorary Editorial Advisory Board of seven international journals. He has been the President of Niagara Frontier Association of R&D Directors. He teaches a graduate course on heat exchanger design at the State University of New York at Buffalo regularly, and will be teaching a Senior level course on Fuel Cell Technology at RIT. Dr. Shah is a Fellow of the ASME and SAE. He received a Technical Achievement Award from Region III of ASME in 1979, Outstanding Achievement Award from GM in 1986, Valued Service Awards from ASME in 1986, 1987 and 1991, 50th Anniversary Award of ASME Heat Transfer Division in 1988, Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award bestowed in 1989 jointly by Pi Tau Sigma and ASME, and ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award, the highest award in heat transfer by the ASME, in 2000. He is listed in 11 Who's Who. Dr. Shah has worked for over 30 years in research, design, analysis, testing, simulation, and manufacturing of compact heat exchangers at three companies and have taught short courses and presented keynote lectures/seminars extensively on heat exchanger design and thermal systems at various universities and research institutes in 32 countries worldwide. He has published over 100 papers in the areas of heat exchangers and 16 books/edited volumes. He started working on fuel cell heat exchangers in mid 1970's with design, analysis, testing and manufacture of fuel cell heat exchangers for Pratt & Whitney and Tokyo Electric Utility. In mid 1990's, he initiated fuel cell heat exchanger work in his group at Harrison for GM's R&D work on fuel cell technology which was eventually transferred to GAPC along with the engineer working on it.
