ABOUT BENGT SUNDÉN

Bengt Sundén
Editor-in-Chief

Bengt Sundén was born 5 September 1949. He graduated as a M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden in 1973, and presented his Ph.D. thesis in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics in 1979 at Chalmers University. In 1980 he was appointed Docent (the highest academic degree in Sweden) and has held positions as Research Associate, Docent and University lecturer. In 1992 he was appointed Professor of Heat Transfer at Lund University, Lund, Sweden. (Engineering faculty at Lund University are organized as the Lund Institute of Technology.) Since 1995 he has served as head of the Department of Energy Sciences.

Professor Sundén has taught undergraduate courses in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Basic Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, and Numerical Heat Transfer. He has also taught graduate courses in Heat Transfer, Heat and Mass Transfer, Convective Boiling and Condensation, Numerical Flow Simulation, Thermal Radiation, and Momentum, Mass and Heat Transfer in Combustion Processes.  In addition, he has taught numerous in-house courses for commercial firms.

Current research topics of Professor Sundén are: Enhancement of heat transfer in compact heat exchangers, e.g., radiators, oil coolers; numerical methods of convective flow and heat transfer in complex narrow geometries, e.g., cooling of combustor walls, recuperators and intercoolers in gas turbine systems; combustion-related heat transfer including thermal radiation, gas turbine heat transfer (impinging jets, film cooled, ribbed ducts), evaporation and condensation in plate heat exchangers, thermal imaging techniques, PIV, heat exchanger networks (process integration); and transport phenomena in fuel cells.

The publication list of Professor Sundén includes more than 300 papers in leading journals, books and proceedings. Professor Sundén has also delivered several keynote and invited lectures and papers. He has been editor of sixteen collected-works books published by international publishing houses, and has authored two textbooks (presently in Swedish). Professor Sundén is involved in referee tasks for more than thirty international journals and has been active in several international and organizing committees, boards etc. He has been Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Heat Exchangers since 1999. Professor Sundén is a fellow of the ASME. From 2005 he has served as associate editor of the prestigious ASME Journal of Heat Transfer. He has achieved several international awards. In 2006 he was appointed honorary professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University, China.

Professor Sundén has supervised more than 140 M. Sc. theses, many of these in cooperation with industry. He has supervised 31 licentiate of Engineering theses and 25 doctoral (PhD) theses. Presently he is supervising 10 PhD students.

PERSONAL INTERESTS
Professor Sundén is interested in arts, particularly paintings of various kind. He also has an interest in sports and is an avid soccer and ice hockey fan. He is a regular jogger, but has slowed down somewhat during recent years due to leg injuries. When he was younger, Professor Sundén was a competitive scholastic wrestler. Other interests include dancing, popular music, and a general concern for societal conditions and rules for human life in various societies and cultures. He lives with his wife Margit in Göteborg close to the sea.
